October 22, 2007: Chobe Park, Botswana

Although we were effectively driving through Botswana just to get to Zimbabwe, we couldn't resist going on yet another safari.
L to R: our guide, Remi, Matt B., Andrew, me, Steve, Joe, Emma:
There is just someting addictive about stalking animals in a Land Rover while getting repeatedly stuck in deep sand. Except, that is, when being charged by a large bull elephant. We didn't have much time in Chobe National Park, just a half day safari, but even though it was rather crowded at times,
Traffic jam, Chobe style:it was worth it just to get close to all the elephants. Other than the aforementioned bull elephant that decided to charge our Rover, that is. I'm not exactly sure why he decided he didn't like our Rover, but there was no doubt he was having a bad day when he flared his ears, trumpeted at a decibal level roughly on par with a jet engine, and started rapidly moving directly toward us. I was, to put it mildly, a wee bit concerned for my safety because our Rover would have certainly lost that battle. Thankfully, it was just a bluff charge and we proceeded to go spend a good half hour watching a herd of over 40 elephants (I kept losing track once I got to 41) that were hanging out on the river flats. It was really interesting to spend a good chunk of time just sitting and watching them all interact with each other. I could have sat there all day, if given the choice, and taken pictures non-stop. As it was, I nearly filled up my camera card. Here are some of my favorites.
